Write a letter to the Editor.
One of the easiest ways to support electoral fairness, is to ensure the media is aware that the referendum is going on and that people are interested in reading about it.
Newspapers, as well as radio shows, often print letters from interested readers. Take every opportunity to let them know why you support fair voting.
Sample Letter:
Dear Editor,
Last time, I was one of nearly a million British Columbians who supported the recommendation of the Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform. Next May, I will again be voting in favour of moving to a Single Transferable Vote because I think it's important that political parties that earn 40% of the vote receive close to 40% of the seats rather than 20% or 70% as has happened in the past in BC.
I personally like how the Citizens' Assembly recommended ranking candidates 1, 2, and 3, so if my first choice does not get in, I will know that I haven't wasted my vote - it can still help one of my other choices.
Our current first past the post system has been used for almost 150 years in BC, and I believe it is time that we update our voting system to one which gives voters more control over our political system and ensures that seats are distributed fairly.
Thanks,
xxxxxxx.
